People still don’t understand social security

So I was reading FactCheck.org and recently they have talked about Democrats denying Social Security is failing.  What I thought was the best part was the reaction of readers in this article

So to recap, FactCheck corrected Democrats who claimed that Social Security is contributing to the deficit.  Now they agreed it is not the main contributing factor, as Obama stated in his State of the Union address, but it still is  adding to our deficit.  I don’t know about the rest of the country, but this is nothing new to me.

They go into very good detail of the deficit and the numbers associated with it. They also go into the emotion surrounding Social Security.  I can understand since for many this is the only source of income for them and their family for retirement.

What confuses me is that for my working lifetime we have been told that Social Security will not support you and you should invest in other forms of retirement.  So I really don’t understand the necessity to rely on Social Security, unless you have no choice.  Or I was just being sold other retirement plans.

It is interesting to read the articles as they are very enlightening to what we as Americans consider our Golden Cows. There are hard choices out there to make and we better make them soon or we are just going to be buried in our own bloat. But that is just my thoughts, leave comments on what you think.
