My husband and I are always looking to find new places to eat. San Diego and it is North County environs usually has a cuisine for almost any palate, if you know where to look. Usually, depending on the type of food, we have a couple of places that we like to go. There are some exceptions, for example Indian food. There are a handful of places that cater to this type of cuisine, but not many.
Our favorite by far is Bombay Café out on Vista Way. The are two problems with this place: 1) it is in the middle of nowhere, so you had REALLY better want the food and 2) the menu is a little expensive. Here is my thing about the menu: you order the entrée but you have to order everything else a la carte. So for example, if you want rice with your meal, it doesn’t come with it, you have to order it, same with the nan. That being set aside, the food is amazing, full of flavor and always consistently good. Since, this place is not always convenient, we have been trying other places nearer our home.
We have tried Indian Princess in Restaurant Row. The food there is priced a bit on the high side and is extremely average. There was nothing on my plate that made me want to go back for a repeat visit.
So we found Curry and More which is over on Las Posas Road, right next to Boudin’s. The prices were reasonable, came with everything and the food was really good. When I try somewhere new, I always order something I am familiar with so I know how it is supposed to taste. That way, I can judge whether the restaurant is somewhere I am going to go back and try something new at a later date. My stand-by for Indian is Tikka Masala. My husband ordered the same entrée only more spicy.
We got take-out and both items were clearly marked which was the the “spicy” one. There was plenty of rice and the portions of nan were good sized. For those of you who have never had nan bread, it is a flat, unleavened bread, like a pita but thicker, used for dipping into the sauce. I recommend getting the garlic nan as the plain version is bland. we also ordered some samosas as an appetizer. The samosas were crispy, and the sauces provided were delicious. Two of the three were quite spicy, so watch for that, if you get them.
The Tikka was flavorful, with a good amount of chicken in it. However, my “mild” one was not mild at all. Within two bites, my mouth was burning. The spice was not so overwhelming that I couldn’t eat, but it was plenty more than I was expecting.
The service there was excellent, my food was ready when I arrived. If you are looking for something different, I would encourage you to check the place out. The can be found on the web at http://www.curryandmore.com.
Until next time!
